A cute dress on its own is a warm weather classic. This one is especially great because it makes me think of these decorative plates my mom used to collect when I was a kid. Coordinated wedge heels and a tote make this easy for summertime office wear.

Friday the 13th
I'm not THAT superstitious, but it's still fun to play with the spooky atmosphere of a Friday the 13th. For this one, I celebrate with a sort of goth look, wearing all black and celebrating the scariest animal of all, the black cat. Depending on your local weather, a pair of black tights (maybe with a texture) might be in order.

Valentine's Day
Being a bitter single, I wasn't going to bother with posting a Valentine's Day outfit. I mean, I'll just be working and then probably heading home to watch Netflix and knit, just like any other Saturday night. But I saw this dress and couldn't resist.
A bit literal? Sure. But it's a pretty dress. Besides, when else can you get away with a big obvious red heart on your bodice? The sweater and fedora bring it back to earth a bit, but beware: if your date is male and shows up in his OWN fedora, you might want to run.

Flapperish
A couple of weekends ago I went to this interactive play called Speakeasy Dollhouse. It's set during Prohibition, so everyone is encouraged to dress up in flapper styles. I didn't have anything that was perfect for the era, but I found a dress in my closet that I'd gotten during one of ModCloth's Stylish Surprise sales and never worn.
But in trying to figure out what to wear for this thing, as well as in trying to prepare a cosplay outfit for something a few months away, I started looking into plus size flapper clothes. The verdict: there aren't very many, especially if you have specific color needs. For my upcoming cosplay, I needed a white dress. Surprisingly, I found one on a Halloween costume website, but it's not exactly high quality. Unless you want to spend $400 on something, you're sort of stuck with cheapo party suppliers.
But I was browsing the Yours Clothing site earlier, not looking specifically for costumes, and I happened upon the fringed dress above. I'm sure someone who is better versed in historical styles could find some inaccuracies or anachronisms, but it's a pretty cute dress reminiscent of the flapper era. So I put it together in an outfit with some other pieces that reference the 1920s -- round toed shoes, pearls, a cloche, and a smaller purse (apparently clutches were all the rage, but that's not practical for everyday now). It may feel a little costumey, but if you swapped out the fishnets for opaque black tights and added a sweater or jacket, you could make it appropriate for regular wear.

New Place, First Day
For my degree, I have to take a few classes in a co-related field, and since they don't have what I want at my university, I take them at a different school. This means that I am dealing with professors and students I don't already know. So I try to look as professional and presentable as possible the first days of the semester to make a good impression.
I got this dress as a Christmas present, and it's really great. I like to pair it with simple shoes and accessories so as not to clash with the plaids. As a bonus, it's a really comfortable fabric, and it even has pockets.

Acid Pop
I don't know what it is, but I really love this little acid wash denim dress from SimplyBe. It's kind of ugly, but in a really great way, and it just begs for some colorful accessories, like a pink hat and striped bag.

Holiday Party
If you're invited to any events this holiday season, you might be worried about what to wear. You can't go wrong with a cute dress and chunky heels, especially if there's some sparkle in there somewhere. The white blazer is fresh, and helps go from day to evening if you need to get to a party straight from work. The red shoes throw in a pop of festive color.

I Invented the Piano Key Necktie! I Invented It!
I invented the piano key necktie by reluctantlyadultish featuring plus size womens motorcycle jackets
I'm a little bit obsessed with this dress. It's so simple up top, but then BAM, the super cool piano print skirt pulls in all your attention. I love anything with a musical reference, even though I no longer play the piano.
With something like this, I'd keep the rest of the outfit simple. Plain jacket and bag, and just a pop of color for the shoes. Some opaque black tights would make this great for winter.

Time to Present
It's time for my final presentation in one of my classes. Augh! Where did the semester go?
I love to wear a cute basic dress with tights and a jacket whenever I'm doing something professional. I think it looks polished while still being cute and fashionable. The collar on this dress is a nice-looking feature, and my trusty buffalo-plaid backpack manages to look nice while still being functional. It's been a great piece all semester, big enough to get my laptop and a few books inside without being clunky or unwieldy.

Outfit Post: Gray and Black
I adore my Zenni glasses, first of all. The beige color means they don't overpower my face, but they still have a cute shape and a hint of sparkle. The short necklace is raw opal, which in my completely unbiased opinion is the best birthstone ever. The long one I bought from an artist setting jewelry near the Fort Greene Park farmers' market earlier this fall. I wish I still had her card, because she had some beautiful stuff. What was great was that many of her necklaces -- including the one I have on -- are on non-leather cords. Those ankle boots I've had for a year or two now. They came from DSW. And as usual I have on my trusty teggings.
Let's talk makeup. I'm massively into purple lipstick. This one is a Revlon matte balm. The mascara I've got on here was sent to me for free from Influenster. It's Rimmel Scandal Eyes. I like it, but I don't know that I'd buy it for myself. The color is nice and the coverage is good, but the curve of the want is a bit unwieldy and too big for my taste. I prefer a smaller wand so I can get in tight to my eyes.

Mad for Plaid
I'm kind of in love with this look. The moto jacket and the plaid give it a bit of a punk feel, but the bucket bag and vintage-inspired heels tone it down and make it really now. This would be a great ensemble to wear to class and look put-together and polished but still completely fun.

New Dresses, Hooray
...Because I don't have enough of those.
Seriously, though, I recently ordered the Coach Tour and Groove You Right dresses from ModCloth, and when they arrived yesterday, I decided to have a little photo shoot and put up my first outfit post on this blog. Since they're so cute.

Fabulous for Fall
Here in NYC, the line between fall and winter has started to blur, and soon we may be under a crush of snow. So let's get as much use out of our cute non-boot shoes and colorful dresses while we can.
The umbrella print on this dress from ModCloth (now sold out, unfortunately) gives a little nod to dreary weather, but the blue skirt brings out some cheer, almost like that patch of sky poking out through clouds. All-black accessories allow the dress to really pop without stealing focus. Oh, and those little triforce earrings are a nice touch to let your inner geek out without overpowering a daytime look.
